Tommie Agee was my favorite player when I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn. He did have knew problems but I think he probably would have had a much better career had he not been beaned by a Bob Gibson fastball in spring training with the Mets in 1968. After that beaning, Agee backed up in the batters box. Opposing pitchers took advantage of that and worked him on the outside corner. He still was an excellent fielder, with good speed, and good power.

He did hurt his knee. That hindered him the most. He also gained a lot of weight, which didn't help the knee. If you look at photos of Agee in '72 compared with '69 or '70, he's chunky and out of shape.

I was 10 years old in '69 when the Mets won the World Series and Tommie Agee was a superhero to me. He was an absolutely great all-around ballplayer.

Played great for the Mets. It's a shame he did not keep himself in shape and got himself traded away in early 70's. God Bless him, he's gone now but will never be forgotten by Mets fans

I agree. He was an amazing player. And now someone owns that marker and its probably in their backyard! Glad it was saved in the demolition anyway.
