Written by Kirsty MacColl's Dad, Ewan, for his wife Peggy Seeger heard singing it here
Apparently Ewan MacColl himself made no secret of the fact that he disliked almost all of the cover versions of the song, referring to them collectively as "the Chamber of Horrors".

  • Flack's version = good to sing

Original version = good to listen to

    Just my two cents

  • May be the original version..... But it's painful to listen to. Sorry. Ewan wrote a magnificent song but it has since been interpreted and sung in a far superior manner than this.

  • I was brought up listening to Ewan MacColl and it upsets me that after writing so many famous songs he never gets the credit he deserves

  • my fellow musician's view on this......STINKS......Roberta Flack took this song where it belonged....AND number 1 in the USA and number 14 in the UK. I read McColl hated her version....said it lacked grace!! Lacked GRACE!!?? Uhhh..have you listen to Roberta's version McColl....???....Petty, childish and unprofessional....she made you a lot of money Dude..... unless you sold the song outright and became bummed when you realized the millions you could of made...sour grapes is my take

  • Funny, because the British songwriter of this song Ewan MacColl died exactly one day before my 21st birthday!

  • @JDV92564 you are wrong, you might like this sung by another singer but real folkies love this version not the sanitised version you prefer which is the rap version of folk to us old folkies.

  • with all respect to the original, Roberta Flack gave it a whole new depth and soul.

  • Comparing this version with Flack... I have to say Flack's was like mature-love... it seemed as if it was being sung as an expression of love between two adults strongly in love. This version for me seemed like young-love. It's sort of innocent and pure, and I love listening to this version because really it all seems so pure and youthful. I also listen to Roberta Flack's and it often puts me in this trance LOL. I sing Flack's version though for someone cause it reflects deep love and emotion

  • @JDV92564 Explain yourself
