Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. Located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The enclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and Iran to the south, while having a short borderline with Turkey to the northwest.
In 1918 Azerbaijan became the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world, but in 1920 it was merged into the Soviet Union in. Azerbaijan regained its independence in 1991.
