Here is a DIY science project made mostly from materials you can find in a kitchen recycling bin. It's essentially a reaction motor powered by a small, negative ion generator (about 12 kV at 80 uamps). The polarity of the aluminum vanes alternates around the rotor (a plastic tube lined with an aluminum strip cut from a soda can). Alternating electrostatic forces of attraction and repulsion drive the motor to around 3,000 RPMs based on readings from my digital tach. That noise was not an added sound track, the turbine really sounds like a high performance race car.

  • Cool!! Needs some electronic balancing done on the rotor :D

  • @Shanjaq The original rotor actually flew apart at high RPM :>(

  • Hey, this is perfect for all that electric wind we've been getting! Everybody is an amateur comedian, heh heh. No, actually that's pretty cool! Thanks.

  • Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for the EWT-2 upload that runs on an industrial strength ionizer...

  • Nice vid !

  • Sounds like a diesel motor.

  • is there any torque?

  • awesome

    a DIY electric high-voltage motor!

  • @FuriousVigor - Nope, this actually works, there are instructions to build them on Instructables . com.

  • This is a joke right?

  • In fact, NASA could use these to power the gyros on satellites from the solar wind. The satellite itself would be the collector. To ground it they would need is a few tungsten emitters on a short tether. Heh, but then they would have to admit the anomalous thrust it produces to the general public...
