Tuning my DX-394 down below 150kHz, without modifications. Any '394 can do this.
Just press :
[LIMIT]
[PGM]
[1]
[FREQ]
[ENT]
And away you go.

  • I bought my DX-394 new when they first came out, some 17-18 years ago? About $300. Over time I did quite a few of the published modifications found for it. Not that great of a receiver; overloads badly on strong signals, not very selective, sensitivity isn't great. It does an adequate job of receiving AM broadcast stations, but isn't a serious rig for SSB, CW or digital reception. Badly overpriced for no more receiver than it is. I have the A model... the B model was supposedly improved.

  • @mnpd007 Nah, the A and the B are electrically identical. There can be more diffrerence between two B models than there can be between two models of a different type. I have a video up here of such a comparisson. The 394 is good. I have even decoded data modes with the DX-150 and 100L, it just takes a little patience, and waiting for the right conditions. The 394 isan eminently capable receiver if you use judicious gain. all in releation to the money, of course.

  • ok i have done this but i dont pick up moere than buzzing so whats the point of below 150 khz....????...jeff..

  • @petchharrison Theres lots of stuff below 150kHz... Time signals, encrypted signals from the Navy and other sources, submarine communications etc. The SAC Grimeton transmitter is down on 17.5kHz. You probably wont hear that much on a telescopic aerial, or even a longwire for that matter.

  • thank you very much for the video . i own a dx-394 i bought at a garage sale for $20 and i love it .

  • @dawala1000 Sounds like you got a great bargain... Ive had over 15 years of enjoyment from mine. Good DX! :)

  • Great video! I tried this trick and it works great. I have a modded Yaesu "frog" that can tune this low, too. Also, have you ever noticed an LCD refresh rate flicker on 394s if you shine a light on the display?

mate, as you know my youtube won't let me share stuff, could you watch the above video please and let me know what you think? I'm wanting to build a bfo for my stepletone, but build one into the set itself using the tone knob on the front as the control. do you think it possible or am I just being a wally?

    giz a clue mate .lol.

  • Hiya Mate, I have been away from my 394 for a while now and I looked this up in your collection to get the gen on how to do it again, forgot to mention earlier on the phone that wire mk 6 is going up in the next week or two with the help of my beautiful assistant keef. the 394 has now moved to the study in readiness.

  • @Pawnfirst007 i was lucky the radio shack by me had it on sale and it was the last one they had .

  • @dawala1000 That was a super deal.
