It's interesting to think that we really have no free will. Although the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. We are swayed by advertising, and peer pressure all the time. We make most of our choices because of these things. But in the end, we are the ones making those choices even if they are swayed, so wouldn't that still be our own free will???

I believed in free will. But with determinism, does that mean you cannot change your future? I guess basically with this whole subject I have more questions then answers. I think what I have gathered is that life is full of choices, some that you have free will to like "what to do this weekend?" (who knows.. you choose) and others that are determined "what will I do when I grow up?" (Get married, have a family, own a house, have a job).

I suppose I believe more in determinism by saying that. I mean a lot of people go by that way of thinking and in a way I think it is so you, your mind, doesn't necessarily have to think about what choice you will have to make next. If you believe in free choice wouldn't you be asking, and requestioning every single decision you came to? "Should I do this, well if I do this then this could come from it, but what if I do that then this may come of it". I would honestly drive myself nuts if I

So this is actually a subject I have always wondered at one point or another in my life. It really is interesting to think that things a determined for us. To think that we may be just following a path that was layed out for us, even our mistakes in life, are in this path?? When I think of this subject, I think of the saying, "if it is meant to be then it will be". I seem to say this statement a lot in my life whether it be my relationship or even a job. Now after reading this chapter,

Determinism vs. Free Will? I believe that they both fall into place at times in our lives. Our government determines a lot for us. For example, the choice to pay taxes (property, income, etc.) is not out of free will. Babbie talks about prejudice may be determined by level of education, religion, or where someone grew up; I feel that no matter the circumstance, an individual has the free will to be prejudice or not. Hopefully not! Tina Leighton

So what this means for us as researchers is that if take every thing into account properly that we should be pretty accurate in predicting the out come of events. It also means that we should be able uncover the reasons for events that have happend in the past. But i suppose it does not really matter so relax about it! from vince as well hope this post you will see i wont.

Ok wel im sick of this i apologize if this is already up there but I cant see it and i might end up making several post like I did last time but some thing is screwed up. any way here i go again I have always believed that if i had the same life experiances as you that i would act the same as you do I had not taken it as fare as determanism but now that I have done the reading Im subscribing to that train of thought. every thing that we experiance in the past determins our actions presantly vinc

That being said, I notice a lot of your students contriving this idea of "free will". Let me know if you want me to debate the points with them as this is one subject I have spend countless time on and I enjoy debating it.

I just got thinking about a time I went to eat chinese with some friends. I had never ate chinese before and I thought that I never would. (Some people told me that it was gross). My friends wanted to go to chinese so I decided to go with them. I now think that I might have felt pressured to go, instead of me using my own free will to go. Or maybe it was curiosity because I never had tried it before. I wonder how we will ever know when we are using our own free will to make choices...hmmm..
Plus, since determinism and free will cannot be tested, why worry about it? I believe that if you're more comfortable believing you have free will and that works for you, that's great. If not, that's great to. I believe its a little bit of both and to tell you the truth, it doesn't really bother me either way because I feel like I'm making my choices all with my own free will. What does it matter if that's not necessarily true?
