Carpenter Ants in Action!

This tree was loaded with them. Large nasty black ants, some with wings. I filmed them coming out of the section of the tree they had eaten away. They did not like the stuff I sprayed on them.

Carpenter ants only eat decaying wood. They can actually save the life of a tree with core rot because they will eat away only the infected portion of the tree and leave the healthy parts alone.

@iMonument okay, I so here is how this all went down. I live in an area where hurricanes are frequent. I had a tree that I saw racoons crawling out ot the top. Assuming the worst , I called a friend that is a tree guy. He checked it out and said the tree is hallow and if... so I had it cut down. Since I like to remember events in my life, I videoed the ants. Not out of any particular intest in ants min you, just for my memories. Pretty nasty looking things huh?

Funny how infact, they dont 'eat' the tree...

I'm a myrmacologist (reasercher on ants)

and well...there probably was a better way of getting rid of them.

EX: cutting some of the log OR moving the log away...
