This is what I hope everyone will regard as a fitting tribute to Kelly Groucutt, the former bass player with ELO/ELO Part II/The Orchestra who died on Thursday 19th February 2009 aged 63. I've used 'The Fox' from the album Moment Of Truth, one of the songs that really showed off Kelly's immense vocal talents.
I'm still shocked, stunned and saddened. I can't really believe this has happened. What a cruel world. Kelly's energy on stage was totally intoxicating and as a person you couldn't have wished to meet a nicer bloke. Nothing was too much trouble, whether it be to sign autographs, pose for a photograph or just have a chat before/after a gig. I have fond memories of being able to meet him in York in 2006 and then shaking his hand as he came off stage at The Doncaster Dome in October 2008 after another great performance.
Kelly truly respected the fans and always had time for them, wherever he was.
Music has lost a true legend, a showman and a truly great man.
Deepest condolences to Kelly's family and friends.
You'll be truly missed.

R.I.P. Kelly.

Apologies to anyone whose pictures I may have used. 90% of them are ones I've taken myself at gigs, but there are a handful of 'really nice ones' which I've taken from a search on Google Images.

  • a great tribute, very sadly missed. did his band ever record a dvd?

  • @huytontravel Thank you. Yes, several DVD's are available. There's the early ELO Live in Wembley DVD from 1978, ELO Part 2 - Access All Areas and The Orchestra Live in Reno. The first two are available from most on-line DVD stores, the latter occasionally on eBay and at live gigs.

  • Rest in peace, Kelly...we love your incredible bass, your perfect second voice on ELO...

Do YOU remember, for example, his voice on Out of the Blue or A New World Record??

  • Yes, Kelly's voice featured very strongly on those albums. Most of my favourite tracks come from those albums.

  • Thanks for your kind comments GeorgeReedDotUS. It's on my list of things to do. I've blocked certain individuals pending removal of some comments. I'm going to tidy things up.

  • Since 1990 Jeff Lynne has lost his mother, then Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Carl Wayne. His comments were made public at the time about them because he was working on projects that involved them. I watched the news outlets here in the USA and there was no mention of Kelly Groucutt's death. I'm sorry to say only his fans cared that he passed away. Guess what? Jeff Lynne lives in the USA! Only God knows what he is thinking right now. Besides it's Jeff's business not ours!

  • Im shocked, i didnt know and dont remember it being in the press. Without Kellys vocals ELO wouldnt have been half of what it was. Im with most here, without the rest of ELO it could have never been the same band. All best wishes to all his family and those who feel his loss. Great tribute, thanks.

  • Thank you, Kelly. You were a beautiful singer, terrific bass player and a lovely person. We miss you terribly, but heaven has yet another shining star.

  • a great tribute to a wonderful man. I had the pleasure to see both ELO with Jeff Lynne and then ELO Part 2 with Kelly performing more of a front role, and in my humble opinion, if it hadn't been for Kelly, Bev, Hugh and Mik along with the likes of Eric Troyer, and other subsequent members, Jeff Lynne would not have had much of an ELO Name to come back to!

  • Maby after working with Kelly for so many years, he would rather keep his feelings about Kelly's passing private. He does seem to be a very private person. Kelly, you WILL be greatly missed! He may no longer be with us, but his music will be with us always!

  • thanks for the music kelly

  • Whenever people badmouth Jeff, it makes him the emphasis and not Kelly. Let's remember Kelly for all his greatness, instead of a feud he was involved in. Kelly would have wanted it that way....

  • R.I.P Kelly

  • Fantastic track. Saw The Orchestra a few weeks ago and bought The Anthology. This track is on it. Brilliant!.
