Asafa Powell bounced back from his disappointing third place at the world championships on Sunday when he broke his 100-meter world record with a time of 9.74 seconds. The Jamaican set the record in his heat at the Rieti IAAF Grand Prix and will have the chance to better the time in the final later on Sunday. (WCSN, WCSN.com, Reuters)

  • what a boring commentator, spanish are awesome or african americans but this guy is shit took him another 9.74sec to realise what happened and even when he realised he sounded boring. and yeah good race.

  • Looked effortless for the last 20-30 metres.

  • @bossofalltime *

this isn't my account, but yo - for sure, I think he could have easily gone 9.68 to 9.6mid-low around there, if he had driven a bit harder over the line... as you said... he just freaking eased off! * at around 8.5 in the race him easing off is marked by him looking at the clock, and shut off the arm drive till the end... I really want to see him shine at The World's and in 2012!

  • @speedyslime93 I think his 80-90m split-time was affected by him easing down, it looked to have occured at like 87/88m where his arm drive looks to really shut off the intensity. I'd vouch to say that with that wind speed (+1.7) he could've maintained 0.85 + 0.85 for 80-90m & 90-100m like he did in Athens in 2005 in his first 9.77 (+1.6) for 9.68. This was more than his usual ease-off you'd agree? He looked like he walked over the line here haha

  • @buzzcutrocks it shouldnt be

  • dangit...i'm doing the 100 in track and field....and our time is no where near that

  • dude you can hear the spanish commentator going crazy but this guy is just boring and a little stupid

  • (continued) here in rieti, he could have ran a 0.86 for the last 10 instead of a 0.90. therefore had he not slowed he would have ran 9.70

  • Here are Asafa's (unofficial) 10m splits for this run, the first number is his reaction time, the 2nd his 20m time, and then every 10m.

    0.137 2.88 3.79 4.65 5.49 6.32 7.15 7.98 8.84 9.74

here are his last 8 10m splits, they french guy who did it could not analyse the first 20m because of the camera angle

    0.91 0.86 0.84 0.83 0.83 0.83 0.86 0.90

because asafa has recorded splits of 0.85 for both his 80-90m and 90-100m (both when he ran 9.77 in athens), one could assume had he not slowed

  • I havent done 100 meters , but in school i did 60 meters - 7.6 seconds .

  • yeaa.. i can't see that happening tho.. even if he came back idt he'd be in the 9.5-9.7 range to compete with these guys or could ever get back down there clean

  • you're probably right, but 4 the sake of competition I hope not, I even hope Gatlin comes back clean and get in there with the rest of the guys that are running 9.74 or less
