My second Great Grandfather and his siblings rode on the orphan trains from Jersey to Iowa. He said that he was a slave and his brother was worked to death. They had three sisters, two of which were adopted and treated really well, one died early but we aren't sure how or why. Thanks for the story.

wow, your posting gave me the chills. The topic is still very controversial. My Great Grandmother was an orphan train rider and though her experience was a good one, she felt deep shame for having been adopted. In fact we never knew she was adopted until she was in her 80's. She had 8 children of her own and believed strongly in "taking care of your own" and didn't believe in adoption. So I wonder too what really happened. I am so sorry to hear what happened in your family.

Thank you! I entered it in my county History Day competition last year and won for my division. If you haven't already read Catherine Reef's book, check it out - she's so great. I'm so lucky that she lived close by so I could interview her!
