The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from air station Atlantic city at 1:05 to assist in a multi-agency search and rescue effort to locate two swimmers in distress in the area of the Great Egg Harbor Inlet.
Coast Guard officials tell the Herald one swimmer made it back to shore safely and the search was underway for the second swimmer reported to be a 19 year-old black male.
The Ocean City Fire Department responded with the Longport Fire Department. Three state police marine units were dispatched from Atlantic City to assist with the search, according to state police.
The Ocean City Fire Department stopped searching at 2:01 p.m. according to radio reports.
State Police and coast Guard boats are continuing to search, according to state police.
