Columbus, GA. 21nov10 - 8 or 9 thousand people gather at the gates of Fort Benning to rally and protest but also to participate in a Funerary Ceremony built organically decades ago by a group including many different kinds of people, such as ministers, priests, rabbis and imans, lay people, anarchists, nuns, etc.
This is very parallel to funerals all over the world where massacres have occurred, or been caused.
It serves each year as a place where people without passports can memorialize a friend or loved one killed somewhere like East Timor, Acteal, or even along the side of a road far away. Personally I think this year a great deal about someone murdered in New London, Connecticut just under a month ago by violent children living their lives out of control in these highly troubled time.
The randomness of our lives and deaths will never be ignored by me.
What a sublime moment. I try to capture that on film here.
Enjoy!
