Watching the Watchers

A self-appointed campaigner, 'Jimmy Justice' is exposing traffic cops who are too quick to hand out penalties to civilians. Here's more on the story.

STORY:
Meet 'Jimmy Justice' - self-styled video vigilante, keeping a watchful eye on New York's police.

He posted a video to the website YouTube showing a traffic cop breaking a parking rule, straight after he fined a civilian for breaking the same rule.

And he got so many supportive replies, it became a hobby:

[Jimmy Justice, Video Vigilante]:
"People have said that I should just make videos of the official vehicles of police officers that are parked improperly and just send that video into the authorities and don't add any color commentary but if I make videos of parked cars, nobody would watch it. It's as boring as watching paint dry. So, I had to do this way so that I would get the attention that I need for this issue and I want to bring these issues for public debate - the issue of New York City's predatory ticketing system where there are so quick to write a summons to a civilian for any petty nonsensical violation."

Some of Jimmy's videos on the website are downright confrontational - here's one where he berates a traffic cop for blocking a fire hydrant while there's a fire raging outside.

He's collected 30 hours of video material so far - and had two cameras broken during his patrols.

But like he says, someone has to watch the watchers.
