A documentary illuminating the investigative process engaged By Quinlin B. Messenger to render an Architectural evocation as a museum for the Broad Contemporary Art Foundation in Santa Monica, CA.

"...there is the belief that the building has an inherent nature, that making is a process of becoming, and of being true to the deepest understanding of the building's purpose, rather than its function"

"Such threads of place and culture weave through time and space. Understanding them is essential to our ability to create places that connect to their landscapes and culture even as they explore new expressions. This making of place is specific and connected, not generic and rootless"

-John Ruble & Buzz Yudell

Potential Energies: Socio and Tectonic Reflections

Los Angeles for some, embodies a destination rich in the promise of success and opportunity...opportunity for an individual to explore, demonstrate, and display their natural talents and gifts. People uproot their entire lives and pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the hope that their individuality will take them the distance: Los Angeles then becomes the receiver, and medium for a high volume of potential energies; housed and at times amplifies the potential energy of the individual. While this pattern is pervasive throughout the social landscape, it is also reflected in the very landscape itself. With California's presence along the Juan De Fuca Plate, and the resulting San Andreas Fault, the earth and land itself are charged with a dynamic sense of potential energy. The tectonic history, and geological forces that are acting on the area at any moment can slip, or rupture forcing dramatic earthly and social responses. The very land that Los Angles is sitting on could be the potential site of the next 300 year earthquake, and like the land, the social world reflects this potential energy, as will the architecture. The force, trajectory, and potential energy of the land will be embodied atmospherically and formally in the museum, and will only be further reinforced through light and surprising but charged social interactions. If one also looks at the very process of Art itself, it is rich in overtones of Potential Energies, like a blank canvas siting on the wall waiting for the first stroke. John Ruble writes in Making Place that, "Architecture and landscape are inevitably the manifestation of deep cultural forces...the dimension of the cultural context are immense and deeply embedded. However an effort to be open to the cultural foundations of a place is critical to meaningful architectural initiatives...to begin our engagement, we start with listening...listen to the multiple constituents" (14). Intrigue, curiosity, and pondering will fill the voids inspired through fracture and slippage in the planes of earth, sky, and water, making vivid opportunities for the user to be surrounded by the cultural strata of place, embodying the spirit of the land, the spirit of its people and their perspectives, all to the rhythm of the cultural reliquary hat is the Broad Art Contemporary Art Collection.

"Place is like the sediment of sentiment...it becomes a catalog for our action, a reference for our being, a Space for our existence, and an environment for our humanity. Place can reassure us of our humanity because it is simply a reflection of it."
