Western countries throw out nearly half of their food, not because it's inedible -- but because it doesn't look appealing. Tristram Stuart delves into the shocking data of wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources.

Every time some asshole tells me we have too many people in the world because we can't feed them, I ask them to look into how much food we waste. Good TED Talk.

...It also possibly lubricates the digestive tract and acts as a "safe harbor" for intestinal flora in times of illness. It may be particularly important early in life because it achieves its greatest development shortly after birth and then regresses with age. ....etc etc

That does not disprove we are frugivores by design! Apes like orangutans, chimps, and gorillas have an appendix but monkeys don't. Humans are not omnivores (by design) IMO. We need to eat a high amount of plant based foods to prevent problems with the appendix, a huge amount of humans DO have problems once it is removed! We still don't entirely know the exact function of the appendix in humans. Yes it cultivates and preserves beneficial germs which helps fight off other bacteria and viruses etc.

Meh, I read a bit of both. I pick up information here and there as is my hobby. My findings in this area have been almost universal. Have you considered the function of the appendix, a rather large and important part of the herbivorous digestive system whith te primary function of breaking down plant matter. In Omnivorous creatures, such as humans, this organ is so unused that, when infected, it is safely removed. In humans, the only function of the appendix is to house useful bacteria.

I have no desire to engage in a hostile conversation either! Chimps hunt on VERY rare occasions and science currently believes this is to increase there chances of having sex with a female. There diet consists almost entirely of fruits and vegetables.

There is plenty of science around to show cooking ANY food creates toxins to varying degrees. Do you read scientific studies, or just magazines and TV shows?

...and what are you talking about voting against comments!!!? I have not voted for or against any comments on this page! Have you lost your mind? Do you think calling me "childish" is respectful? (especially since you have wrongly accused me!)

Have you READ my comments!!!? I have been respectful at all times! You have provided ZERO "proven facts backing up my claim that meat provides nutrients that are not present in vegetables". BTW I am talking about FRUITS AND vegetables. Please try to read carefully before commenting. I can give you a long list of essential nutrients missing from meat now give me ONE missing from a vegan diet. JUST ONE!!!!! ..... I await your reply below

Why you would be so childish as to take valuble time out of your day to vote against my comments is beyond me. All I wished to accomplish was to inspect your way of life from an academic point of veiw. Not to offend, but your comments do seem a bit pushy, not to mention outright nasty, towards anyone with a different oppinion than you. I have, after all, provided a respectful tone and stated only proven facts backing up my claim that meat provides nutrients that are not present in vegetables.

Before I speak any further, I just wish to inform you that I am not in any way criticising your way of life. I am simply attempting to understand the mechanics behind that choice. I have no desire to engage in a hostile conversation.

Chimps and Bonobos, our closest living relatives, are known to spear and eat smaller primates as a regular part of their diets.

Also, there is no scientific evidence that cooking contaminates meat. In fact, it does the opposite, rendering it safe to consume.
