THE CHOPIN SYMPOSIUM June 17-19, 2010

Over the decades millions of people have been moved by Chopin's genius, transported by his passion and won over by his inspiring melodies. His music is a universal language of communication and speaks to the most diverse audiences in ways that are unfathomable. It is an honor to invite you, and we hope you will join us to celebrate the composer's life and art.

In its third year, The Chopin Symposium is gaining recognition for its intriguing programming. Our guests are extraordinary and the music sublime: an opening recital by legendary pianist Russell Sherman; lectures by Chopin scholars Jeffrey Kallberg and Jim Samson, Liszt scholar Alan Walker, pianists Angel Ramón Rivera and Bruce Brubaker, and author and historian James H. Johnson; two master classes held by pianists Russell Sherman and Ya-Fei Chuang; and performances by the Rivers School Conservatory students. A roundtable discussion involving our guests will be at the core of our exploration of Chopin's artistic, historical and social milieu, and will provide insightful exchanges with the audience. As 2011 marks the 200th birthday of Franz Liszt, the occasion has inspired concerts, master classes and lectures that will also focus on the extraordinary creative genius of the Hungarian composer. Extraordinary pianist Edward Cohen will join the Symposium in a historical reconstruction of the duel between Liszt and Thalberg, which took place in 1837 at the palace of Princess Christina di Belgiojoso.
