This is a project done while at Savannah College of Art & Design, for Cinematograpy & Editing. The project was to interpret and express a poem visually and metaphorically through the use of video and editing.

I chose the poem through suggestion and because I felt it would be different than what would be chosen at SCAD. The poem is be Paul Laurance Dunbar a very famous African American poet. If you have a chance read it before viewing. Written during the period proceeding emancipation the poem to me speaks on many levels on how African Americans of the time had to sacrafice emotion and true self to conform to society and fit within a world they had yet to be accepted in. I feel that through this choice of emotional sacrafice that Paul hits the nerve of inner strength and all that occured within someone who gave the universal front to achieve happiness, however ironically through that journey never being able to achieve it.

In my video choices I chose to keep it very metaphorical as I believe the poem is. I chose to explore this idea of a visage creating in sorts more than one truth or more than one true you. I chose to explore the idea of the african americans having to sacrafice a part of themselves to confrom. Also the ideas of being more than one person within yourself leading to a struggle and at times you questioning who you really are inside.

Hope it makes sense to more than just me lol. I enjoyed filming and it speaks volumes to me, as my first actual film I hope I am successful in translating to an audiance. I'd like to thank PJ robinson and Nathaniel Small for helping me make this project come to life.

  • i'm not sure if it does it for everyone else but the audio and video are out of sync (video faster) and my edits were driven largely by the beat so please excuse that.
