WRONG! A "Private University" is one not funded by the state where it's located. As far as the issue with private property is concerned. A public place is defined in MA as any place that the public readily has access to without having to break any type of barrier (window, door, gate). This quad area is not private and the university is not enclosed in gates. Any member of the city/town boardering Tufts has every right of access to your "private" university

Suggested reading material: National property boundary laws. Also, they cleared it with the city, police even help make sure the event stays safe.
