"Thank you," I said as I brushed Mia's hair out of her eyes. "For what you did back there," Nick looked at me thoughtfully. "No one deserves to be treated like that. It was rude," I laughed without any humor. "Are you kidding? That's them being nice," Nick studied me for a minute and I looked away, embarrassed. The last thing I wanted Nick to know was that I was bullied by pretty much everyone at school. I had not one friend. Not that I minded either. But in the halls, I had trained myself to dodge elbows that were meant to hit my gut or ribs and tried my hardest not to get shoved. And I always made sure that when Tiffany Briers was around, I'd go the opposite way, no matter how late to class I would be. My life was a living hell.

"I want to be your friend, Selena," Nick said sadly. "But you won't let me in," I ignored his gaze. "What you did back there was nice, but what you did in the past is unforgivable," I said, pain shooting across my heart. "And I won't let it happen again," I stopped in the middle of the store and looked at Mia. "You aren't buying Mia a jacket," I said. "I won't let you," I said. I opened my wallet and looked at how much money I had. Only $42.23. I sighed. Mia was worth it. I picked up a jacket and had Mia try it on. I bit my lip. I wanted something that would really keep her warm, so I picked up a puffy coat and had her try that on instead.

She smiled and clapped, so I took it as a yes. I looked at the price. $25.00. Sighing, I pulled the jacket up and headed to the cashier who gave Mia a sweet smile. "Well hello there, cutie!" the girl said. She looked extremely young. Mia stared at her curiously before breaking into a smile. "She is so cute," the girl mused. "This coat is on sale. $14.99," I sighed happily. "Thank god," I mumbled to myself as I started pulling out a ten and a five. Nick pushed my hands away from my wallet. "I'm buying," he said firmly, handing over his money. "Nick, I said no," I argued.

"And I said that I was buying Mia a jacket. I want to do this for her," the cashier looked at us. "Is she your daughter?" I shook my head. "My baby sister," I smiled at her. "She looks just like you," the cashier smiled. "Nick, let me pay for her," Nick shook his head. "Have a great evening. I hope to see you again, cutie!" she said, he eyes on Mia. Mia smiled happily and leaned her head against my neck. When we walked out of store, I tore the tags off the jacket and put the jacket on Mia. "I'll walk home," I said when we reached the exit. "Selena, its dark and late. I don't want you or Mia getting hurt. My mom would love to have you two for dinner," I sighed. "You already spent money on Mia when I told you not to. I'm not going to your house and mooching off your families dinner. Besides, my mom is going to kill me if I don't go home," I was hoping I wasn't being literal.

"My mom misses you. What if my mom calls your mom? Would that work?" My eyes widened. "NO! Don't call my mom!" Nick stared at me suspiciously. "Okay, we'll have dinner with you, alright? Just don't call my mom," Nick nodded, but I know he wanted to know why I flipped out about contacting my mom. I'm gonna get enough of a beating without her knowing that I with a guy. If she knew I was going to his house. . .I don't even wanna know what would happen.

Nick opened the passenger door for me and I buckled Mia into the seat between us. After we had left the store with all the clothing, I had bought Mia some gloves so her hands wouldn't get cold. They were only 2 bucks and Mia needed all the warmth she can get. I had insisted that I buy the gloves and finally Nick had given in.

As we made our way to Nick's house, it was filled with awkward silence. Mia had fallen asleep halfway there and I smiled as she slept warmly with a sweet smile on her face. It was probably the first time Mia had ever fallen asleep happily in her entire life. Not that she's been alive that long, but I was glad she was so comfortable.

As we entered Nick's driveway, I realized it wasn't the same house. He moved? It was huge and there were stables with horses way behind their house and a huge pool by their deck by the back door. I was going to kill Nick for making me do this.
