Isn't your log example at the end wrong? ln (e^x + xz^2) doesn't simplify to ln (e^x) + ln (xy^2). The rules for logarithms converts multiplication into addition and exponentiation into multiplication. ln (e^x) + ln (xy^2) is equal to ln (e^x*xy^2), not ln (e^x + xy^2), right?
