really well-stated... thanks for posting this.
prohibitions against gay marriage also discriminate against pastors, ministers and rabbis who wish to perform gay marriages. this violates the first amendment's guarantee of free exercise. why don't you value religious freedom?
@ monty287
can we vote to reinstate slavery? why should such matters lie with the people when it is an easy to oppress minority?
-
It is considered sexual orientation, not preference. There is a huge difference. Preference implies a choice. Not sure how I could have made a choice like that at the age of 9.
-
Actually, that brings us back to my original statement, "State constitutions are not based on the concept of "majority rules" if it was we would still have slavery. They are intended to protect everyone equally." I predict that within 5 years you will see in the federal courts and equality for all will win out.

Haha! I needed to change the pic anyway. And that's what I've been saying. Besides, I think it'll only be a matter of time before those states which passed gay marriage will have elections of their own similar to Prop 8. The matter SHOULD lie with the people. That's the way this republic should be working. Not recently, though.

What ever, It is still not relevant to same sex marriage. It will end up in the federal courts eventually.
BTW, I was around in the 80s so I like your hair. Hope you didn't take that part as an "insult".
-
Interesting how you resort in insults when logic disagrees with you, isn't it?
Anyway, this is the principle. There is no such thing as a right to marry for anyone. Marriage licenses were originally given so that you wouldn't marry your sister, etc.
By the way, thanks for reminding me to update my picture. It's been a while.

Dude, you need a license to drive a car so you don't kill anyone. How does that have anything to do with this you idiot. You should get a license to have that 1980s porn star haircut.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." END OF STORY!

With this being said banning same sex marriage is not discriminating against gays. A straight man cannot marry another straight man to gain government benefits either. Its about promoting the best environment for the development of our children. Which is a low conflict house hold with a mother and a father. Yes I know there are heterosexual households that are a bad environment for children but lets not add more, lets work on encouraging and strengthening families, Respecting gays in other ways.
You seem like a nice guy but I think you misunderstand Prop 8 a little bit. I love all people. Gays included. I'm a Christian. I am commanded to love all people. And I really do!
I want equal rights and opportunities for gays too.
Prop 8 keeps all Gay rights and privileges in tact. It just keeps the name "Marriage" as a label for traditional marriage only (man and a woman).
I'm bummed that some people see Prop 8 as a hateful thing. I don't hate anybody.
Religion invented marriage

Tradition says that marriage is between a man and a woman, this is very true. But at the same time, tradition also stated that only white men could vote and own land. Times change, as does the meanings of certain words. We're on the verge of another change. Marriage should no longer just be reserved for a man and woman, but it should be an open ended word that is not specific to any religion, race, or culture. This isn't a question of destroying a religion, it's a question of equality.
