Narrowing the Gaps aim is to demonstrate how NHS North West is supporting the development of ethnic staff to move into more senior NHS management roles. At present in the North West health system, the workforce is made up of over 11% ethnic staff but only 2.5% of these staff are in senior and/or leadership roles.
To increase the workforce diversity NHS organisations need to ensure that gateways and pipelines into the workforce are created which are accessible to all equality communities including ethnicity, disability, gender, etc.
The regional programmes (e.g. Breaking Through) are a pipeline into both the national Breaking Through programmes. By developing, stretching, coaching and mentoring individuals will enable them to progress within the system supported. Also in terms of workforce modernisation over the last few years the NHS has created new pathways e.g. assistant practitioners and advance practitioners. We have tried to ensure that through these routes we also are widening participation and therefore increasing the ethnic representation of our workforce.
