small capacitor explosion

i blew up a capacitor in my back garden... its not too dangerous but it will show you what can happen if something goes wrong in your t.v ot hi fi systems becuase they both have things like this in them. with the component working properly it is no problem but with reversed polarity (+ on the - and - on the +) they will build up a lot of pressure and explode.

That would never happen in a tv or hi fi system anyway because of rectifiers.

just using it! we came back from holiday, turned it back on at the wall... and as soon as i pressed the on button on the remote, BANG!

Modern capacitors are boring, they either go "pshhhhh!" or "pop!" maybe the occasional "bang!".

However capacitors from vintage electronics like very old radios and tube amps have a tendency to go "BOOOOOOM!!!!!!" when they let go, throwing metal shrapnel, paper, and foil all over the place.

Not if you replace the capacitor backwards. Then the rectifier will make sure it gets the WRONG polarity!
