@smazz104 Those are heat shields that protect the spark plug wire boots. They are spring-loaded, so to get a wire off a spark plug you must push the sleeve down toward the engine and hold it there, compressing the spring slightly, which will expose the boot so you can get a good grip. It takes a little getting used to. To reinstall, simply place the sleeve over the boot, with spring pointed downward, when reinstalling the wire to the spark plug.

stupid question but does and ignition coil like a distributor on older cars. i guess does it do the same function?

great vid! On the same 3800 engine, when moving along to the spark plugs (changing plugs) what do you do with the metal sleeve around the plug? Do you rip them out? try to put the socket inside? Its been a while since changing plugs on a car - I dont recall seeing these sleves before. Any help on replacing plugs for that engine is appreciated - believe it or not i havent been able to find a vid of that on youtube...

@lamilicia If you have a bad coil sometimes one of the symptoms is that the car may hesitate or shutter when you accelerate or idle rough.
A little trick to see if it's arching out is to get a spray bottle with water and spray the coil and plug wires, start the car and see if you can see they arching out. If you have a bad coil or plug wire, usually this will show you what coil is bad.

@1aauto how do you know if you put too much water on? i have a 3.8 series 2 in camaro and im having those exact symptons... i have noticed that on one set of ignition coils there is some corrosion on the plugs and inside the sparkplug boots, but on the other sets there is none at all... is that also a way to find out which set is bad?

@DaveKoehler1992 Not much. You can just mist it with the spray bottle.
