Wow, I was wrong to say that. I haven't bought one in a long time. If that's the way any of them are made, I'm shocked. 4 cells would have a higher capacity than 32 AA sized cells occupying the same space. Not only do you not take advantage of the non-linear relationship between power and size but it would cost more to manufacture. Weird.

A long time ago lantern batteries were pretty common. I have taken a few out of their cases. I confess that I don't really know what percentage of lantern batteries sold today are made this way. All I know is it doesn't make sense to use 32 AA cells because the 32 AA cells which fit into a lantern battery case would have a lot less capacity than 4 of the same kind of cells that fit into the same space and it would cost more. Maybe there's a smaller market now?
