specifically about how he won't stand up and confront his own problems and fears, and (non Canon) he's a cheater.
(assuming Rei is a completely separate entity, and not a clone of Shinji's mother)
Shinji was Rei's boyfriend, but then he cheated on her with Asuka and Misato, and Rei dumps him
and now he's feeling sorry for himself, whilst not apologizing to Rei or anything like that
(I know it's been done before but it was a good idea at the time)
