an exact copy of a physical disc (CD, DVD, UMD...) in one digital file.
so its a file that contains the same data as the disc it has been made of.
using hacks, your PSP can open these ISOs and play them like they would be a regular UMD.
it decreases loading times dramaticly. ISOs can also be made of Movie DVDs or games. or music CDs.

i have a 3000 and i dumped all my UMDs and play them from ISOs because its much faster and consumes less power and doesnt make any noise

I have mixed feelings about digital distribution. On the one side it's convenient, on he other, you own nothing, can't lend or re-sell to anyone, can't re download once the service is dead in however many years time.
