This was first rag to use the 3-over-4 melody pattern that was utilized to extremes in "Black and White Rag" and "12th Street Rag". It was composed by Charles L. Johnson and published in 1906. Here it is played by Keith Taylor in his highly improvised style.

Recorded Saturday 11 August 2007 during the 9th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival.

  • wow look at all those piano rolls in the back round!!!! I wan them all

  • Heh yeah, at this year's festival (which is just a week and a half from now) there's even a "Sing-Along with the Player Piano" on the schedule, so we have an excuse to go digging around through that wall o' rolls.

  • Have any attempts been made to scan those rolls? Before they deteriorate from repeated play, someone should visit with a scanner and take care of the rare ones, likely some in there that could be scan worthy.

  • @AAErikCO I'm not sure. Certainly, AMICA members know of this place, as they hold an annual street organ rally in Sutter Creek, and automatic instrument collector John Mottoros lives there. So I'd think if there were rare rolls to be found there, John might have pointed them out. My own collection, on the other hand... I really should document what they are and see if anything is rare in there. I did just record an old leaderless roll of mine on video, picked at random. I'll post it soon.

  • Keith is my cousin and I am sooooooooo happy to have found this place. I've been listening to Keith play since I was a wee child (he's 3 years older than I am). :-)

  • Out of the ordinary of course, it's Keith Taylor! Love the jazzy improv which mostly works.

  • CLAP,CLAAP,CLAP,CLAP

  • Enjoyed it!!
