@marcellny Indeed. I have yet to hear a Bach cantata that is anything short of magnificent. I haven't heard all 200+ but as far as I've seen there doesn't seem to be a dud among them.

Scholl & Herreweghe's version of BWV 54 is more commanding with a rhythmic pulse that is lacking in this rather slow performance by Helen Watts which seems rather lifeless in comparison.

Marvellous ! Helen Watts had a wonderful voice. This version of Bwv54 will not be bettered. Thurston Dart gets the pace just right.

Why doens't anybody else do it that way? It's so much better than all this high speed Bach Kantaten stuff. Which is usually not too bad though, but this here is so much better sung slowly.

I agree, the tempo is correct in this performance. It makes alot of difference in allowing the listener to savor the incredible beauty of the string sequences and the many suspensions. Not to mention the beautiful voice of Helen Watts. I used to have this album on vinyl but alas it has disappeared. Would like to get the whole cantata.

Semplicemente sublime..Come non esserne rapito dalla voce di questa grandissima cantante?Grazie per questo post.

I listen to a lot of classical music (and have 19 hours of Bach on my ipod) but I have not been a fan of this aria in the past. (Which may shock many of you!) I found the usual very fast performances buried the emotion of the singer.
- Then I found this aria sung by Helen Watts. The counterpoint has been stretched out allowing Ms. Watts to caress every note. Her sustain is marvelous. I was overwhelmed and just downloaded the entire piece. Thank you so much A60stock!

@bb1111116 Many thanks for your kind words about Helen. She was highly appreciated by audiences in Britain and her recordings with Bob Dart are all worth exploring.

Thanks. I heard Helen Watts, who died back in October 2009 , many times and was always impressed by the purity of her voice. Next month we will feature her singing Handel. Meanwhile do download the whole cantata from our site .
