Andras Schiff and Angela Hewitt are concidered by many to be two of the premier Bach interpreters before the public today. Here Schiff plays the aria and the first three variations from Bach's Goldberg Variations.
Schiff's Aria is laced with toxic rubato. Terrible. The variations, ditto. He has no feeling for Bach. I also agree with someone here who said the repeats should be omitted. They are a quaint 17th century custom probably designed to help the listeners of that era to better comprehend the music, but irrelevant today. Mozart, of course, played almost every phrase twice, probably for the same reason. But not appropriate today.
I would love to play on that piano. It sounds really good. Does anyone know what that piano is? Steinway probably, but I've come across some Yamaha's that could sound kind of like that with some tweaking.
Haha it's funny that you say you are too used to listening to Gould because as I read your comment I was thinking 'here is someone who listens to the 1981 recording too much'.
@TheGherring or Tureck, Barhami, Yudina, Arrau, Nikolayeva...
