  • Recorded at 3942 Third Avenue, Detroit. Fortune's studio was a 18 X40 garage in the back of the record store, with a dirt floor and a homemade mixer board.

  • Cool! Thanks for the bit of history. I always enjoy hearing this kind of info.

  • HUGE NYC hit in the spring of `62, played by all the R&R and R&B radio stations.

  • Great dance song -- would be neat to see this on "Dancing With the Stars" some time ...

  • @coyotesong Yes, Nate was from Detroit. He attended Eastern High School and would have graduated with the 1962 class, except he left school early to pursue his career ("Village of Love" had already hit nationally, and he was touring and appearing on American Bandstand). "Village of Love" made the Top Ten in surveys in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

  • Can't say they all were...but as the label says, this one's Truly Great....

  • Thank you for a great memory

  • This has one of my favorite bass parts of that era.

  • Great song. I know I have this and it is on Fortune but red label I think.

    Thanks for the post.

  • This song was the only national hit that Nathaniel Mayer& the Fabulous twilights had, but its beat and style were just perfect for the fast dances of 1962. It was an era of great songs, great dances and young romance. I know, I was there along with 75 million other "Baby Boomers."

  • @rdf1947 I was in the Army in '62, so I first caught it on Little Walter's (no connection to the blues harpist) oldies show on MIT campus radio, WTRB, in the '70's, before Ted Turner bought the callsign. Usually, tho, we had the same sounds in Europe as in The World. Somehow, ALL R&B was on the Decca label, which had long been out of business in the States.

  • @northlight1908 Wow. So i went by there a gazillion times on my way to Cass Tech and then Wayne State without knowing this excellent fact. so was Nat originally from Detroit??? I love this song as much today as when I listened to it time after time nearly 50 years ago.
