Sick Australorp Recorded on August 22, 2008

Please Note: This chicken is healthy now!!!!! Look at my other videos and you will see her be-bopping around with the other two. My three chickens are all very sweet to each other and are all very sweet with me. This one [her name is Beatrice] sits on my lap and spreads her wings out for naps in the sun. Thanks.

My recommendation if you have a chick experiencing this pain [note, I am NOT medically trained and never owned chickens before, you need to research and seek proper advice for medical emergencies]

:
1) if you can afford it, go to an avian vet,

2) if you can't afford a vet, post in backyardchickens.com forum (medical emergency) and gather advice -seemed to me most of the peeps are trained or experienced chick-people. Also there are regional yahoo groups for backyard chickens - sometimes vets respond and offer to help off-the-clock.

2a) Try electrolytes, chick crumble food, yogurt, Poly-Vi-Sol (no iron), a bit of grape to eat. Lower your expectations b/c the chick is tinsy-tiny and can't eat much. But keep at it.

2b) Get time off from work. I had nearly a whole week off from work, so I was with her every day monitoring and fussing. I'm pretty sure if I had been away, she would have died.

2c) seperate the sick from the healthy. Be prepared for sad, lonely peep-peep sounds. Maybe divide their space with wire so they can see each other and huddle close. Sometimes the weak get picked on by the strong.

  • My little chick is sick. I am also not sure of the issue. She has a bad leg, so maybe it was that she could not get to her food and water in her previous coop.

I am giving her individual care and I plan to feed her some antibiotics tonight. If anyone else knows of a good idea...let me know...

  • @Spicermonkey Did your chick survive? I really don't know much about curing sick chickens. Talking with folks on the Backyard Chicken Forum is what saved my australorp. She's the smallest of the pack, but lays as many eggs as the others.

  • I know its hard but you really should kill this chick, it could pass disease on to your healthy chicks and it looks like it is suffering.

  • If you look through my other videos you will see this chicken is alive and well.

I don't know what was wrong, but I fed her electrolytes and vitamins and protein and nursed her for about a week and she turned around.

At the time I thought for sure she was a goner and I made this video to get help from several chicken forums (including BackYardChickenForum) and the advice I got helped me rescue her.

Thanks for the advice, but she's a happy and adorable chicken now.

  • PLEASE HELP ME! MY BABY CHICKS ARE VERY SICK AND ONE OF THEM DIED ALREADY:'(

  • @NurseFusion

Yep! And he turned out to be my little rooster. Haha! He is running around crazy as can be. I gave him Tylan. An antibiotic for swine and cattle. Just a little teaspoon of it, and he was ready to chase butterflies in the yard the next morning. It;s always the favorite chicken that has the problems it seems...Lol!

  • half aspirin every morning, every night, and some antibiotic in the water she drinks, she'll be alright,

  • i have a chick acting similar to this- do you know what was wrong with it?

  • poor baby
