Naegleria sp. in centrifuged CSF specimen from fatal case of Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM). Pseudopod can be seen extending, then body of parasite follows behind it. Taken with iPhone directly on eyepiece; technically difficult and definitely suboptimal.

  • This is why everyone should save up for a home water distilling rig.

  • @michaelryanc

That's true; however, if the municipal water is not adequately chlorinated, then it can be acquired through the tap...as it was in this case and 2 other cases (one in Arizona, another in Louisiana earlier in October 2011). The details will forthcoming in an MMWR issue to be published in January 2012.

  • This parasite is very sensitive to chlorine (<.5ppm) so it is usually only encountered in natural water sources. It also lives in a dormant state in cooler water. So only tropical or geothermal sources can contain an infectious form.

  • How wide is it across, in nm? And what kills it?
