Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, a.k.a. "Witkacy" (February 24, 1885 September 18, 1939) was a Polish playwright, novelist, painter, photographer and philosopher, more:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanis%C5%82aw_Ignacy_Witkiewicz

During the 1930's, Witkiewicz published a text on his experiences with "narcotics," including peyote; his paintings are often full of descriptions what mixture and kind of drugs he was applying himself before starting to paint.

Shortly after Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany in September 1939, he escaped with his young lover to Eastern Poland. Following the Soviet invasion of Poland on September 17, 1939, Witkacy committed suicide.

In his home country Poland, a week ago, an anniversary of 70 years from his tragic death was celebrated.

Tango "Morfina" is probably of Italian origin (?).
Record, its label is presented at the end of the video - JP's, author's of the video collection.

Sound transferred without any modification or trials of making it "polished & beautiful".

Pictures - found and collected on-line with hope of their being in a public domain.
Witkacy's autoportrait is finishing the slide of his paintings.

  • I love the paintings. They are so modern. His documenting specific drugs used for specific painting is interesting. Are his writings available in English? You write he escaped Poland's Nazi invasion in September 1939 then he proceeded to kill himself just a few days later on 17th of September 1939 when Soviets invaded? Are those correct dates? If so was suicide inspired by the fear of how he would be treated by Soviets as a Jew? as a homosexual? or due to other reasons if you know?

  • @TamarZucker

Witkacy was neither homosexual nor Jew and he didn't have to be to underdake that fatal step. In three words - no place for more - all his world and philosophy collapsed in view of the war attack from both sides. I do not know if translations exist but it is very well possible. Yes, the dates are - historically - correct and I am here surprised to have received such a question.

  • THANK YOU for helping to introduce me to this fine performer.

A kind of Carlos Gardel of Poland, just in my humble opinion. I have yet to read up on his history.

I do love the fact that there is a Hawaiian-sounding slide assisting an Argentine tango sung by a Polish Jew....you just have to love music, nothing else trandscends like that, borders and all.

  • @BaronEmpain

You named it perfectly, Dear Baron.

My best greetings from Poland !

  • Mógłby mi ktoś powiedzieć, co za utwór stanowi intro do filmiku?
