An excerpt from Ernest Bloch's Sacred Service with photographs he took at the time of the composition, 1931-33. Bloch settled in the village of Roveredo- Capriasca in the Swiss-Italian Alps in 1931 to compose. He often sought the refuge of nature and the company of local peasants who he felt to be so authentic in a world of false ambition. The video uses his photographs of these peasants as well as the trees that he loved. He came to see music in the trees and titled some of them after the great composers. Made by Eric Johnson from prints he made from Bloch's negatives in the 1970's generously made available by Bloch's children, Lucienne Bloch-Dimitroff, Suzanne Bloch and Ivan Bloch.
