As part of my personal efforts to shrink my family's environmental impact, we have begun the process of replacing our front lawn with perennial plants, shrubs and trees. At the time was not cognisant that the Ivy or the butterfly bushes were not native. I think not-coincidentally both non-native species died. Now I get to plant native ones!!!

English Ivy? I congratulate the guy for tearing out the lawn but if he were really environmentally minded he would more mindful of the non-native, invasive species he is planting in place of his lawn.

Low maintenance is my type of garden.

Growing fruit, vegetables and herbs would be a better use. It would certainly lower your carbon footprint In the UK there is a movement to do this called 'Up Front'. As you mentioned most people don't actually use their front lawn.
