Having an opportunity to grab some sun while at sea on a submarine is real treat. It's one thing to be in the bridge, it's another thing altogether to get the chance to grab some beach time with your mates topside, chowing down sliders (burgers) and hot dogs and other fixins appropriate to the occasion. Needless to say, any warm water invites a call to jump in, even if that means dealing with sharks and the 10,000+ feet of water beneath you. (After seven feet, who's counting?)

To deal with the likes of sharks and other sea monsters, the boat stations a watch with a loaded rifle and pistol to ward off any uninvited Jonah fish. I guess that brings a little comfort, but I never thought about being dragged down by big fish. I was a little concerned about the guy with the gun though.

During my six-year tour in the Navy I got to enjoy a number of visits to Steel Beach and occasionally taking a dunk in the Caribbean, the waters of Bermuda, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic Ocean. A fun time was had by all.

  • Guy who did this obviously has good taste - two of my photos were included in it!

  • @RM1SS These photos were extracted from a set of pics put up on the Facebook page, Got Dolphins. I really appreciate fellow submariners sharing their experience with other bubbleheads. Thanks for sharing, mate.

  • As an old smoke boat sailor, "Playboy of the Pacific" and Shell Back, I can truly appreciate the memories of diving from the shears in Acapulco Bay and taking a dip at the equator in route to NZ. Those were the days! Can't even imagine females aboard...but most welcomed in the goat locker! =) Great job on this video! Thx mate!

  • Pretty sure the guy at :30 is part of Operation Golden Flow.

  • @Dizzlenator05 These ladies are midshipmen on board the USS Michigan during summer cruise.

  • @Dizzlenator05 Valid point that they might be midis. i did midi ops a few times and we never were that lucky. (or unlucky depending on how you want to look at it.)

  • @schaeff042 Those are most likely midshipmen. I had three steel beaches with our female midshipmen on board in my 5 years on my boat. They are out there to experience everything the Navy has to offer. And if you haven't noticed anything about military news, they are about to start allowing females to serve on submarines as well. Starting with the officers and working their way down to the enlisted eventually...

  • what's up with the picture @ 2:39? how'd that one happen? anyway, i'm sure there were plenty of happy submariners on that boat!
