My instructor had me simulate an engine failure near Chehalem airport (17S, Newberg, Oregon) -- which has a 2300' runway. Aircraft is a Beech Debonair. The alarm you hear is the "landing gear is retracted" alarm which sounds when that's the case and the throttle is pulled back. We waited until the last few seconds to lower the gear in order to maximize glide distance.
