i have to do the same thing to with the inside door handle where you have to pull the handle a little bit to lock it. I have no idea why but it works so i never messed with it.

@brookstl89 That is how the car is designed. Its to prevent you from bumping the lock and locking yourself out of the car. It says so in the owners manual if you read it.
