USC president C. L. Max Nikias celebrated the university community and invited students to celebrate the richness and diversity of Los Angeles in a speech at Bovard Auditorium Feb. 1, 2011.
The event marked the first time in recent years that a USC president formally has addressed the student body.
After thanking the student leaders who suggested the address, Nikias reminded his audience that the rise in student academic achievement has been the "big story" behind USC's success.
He then spoke about the university's new strategic planning process, which has as a top goal fundraising for more student scholarships, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
He also called for continued and increased engagement with the university's neighborhood and the diverse metropolis of Los Angeles.
