James Kalm is caught doing late night recon on the installation of recent paintings by one of todays most accomplished and recognized artists, Peter Doig. Kalm returns for the opening to bring viewers a glimpse of the works and the attendant crowd of art world dignitaries and well-wishers. Using diverse means, and sources, Doig paints with a spontaneous and inventive hand achieving layers of translucent color that recalls Rothkos scrims of pigment and the simplified figure in landscape compositions of Milton Avery.

  • Great video. I don't get why those girls were so testy though.

  • I pledged to give viewers a realistic view of, not just the art, but the whole art world. Maybe I was a bit utzy with'em.

  • God I´m glad I don´t live in NYC with hordes of self-important snobbish bitches like those two...

  • i love the way you capture the atmosphere of the NY gallery scene. It really keeps me in touch and it really affirms that i'm not missing all that much not living there anymore.Ha Ha! You really handle yourself well, when you are confronted by those "important" arrogant gallery assistants in any episode. Keep that exchange going a little more! It makes for good drama! Also, do more studio visits! I love to here what artists actually have to say and i'm sure they like the attention.

  • isn't the art world a bitch...and a bastard. You just want to pee in the water and be able to get away with it...Love it...Great. The Openings of any art show...are a study in posing to the extreme...love it...thanks.

  • Thanks James. I always look forward to your videos. I cannot believe those snoby women.t I would never buy anything from that gallery after seeing how those woman treated you. Ass holes.

  • @jameskalm Anyone would think it was their art, I guarantee they're wannabe known artists, but are settling for curator type jobs. The bitterness seeps from within.

  • great video _ good comments_ good paintings ....!!

    greetings from austria

  • great video _ good comments_ good paintings ....!!

  • This is why I don't go to openings.

Doig's work is wonderful. I just don't need to see it at a gallery. I'd rather go to his studio.

  • They go to cute art schools that cost a fortune, then they don't sell their own work, and start working at galleries...now being able to associate themselves with the art world...thus maintaining the snooty demeanor. Lots of massive insecurity, then forming clics (sp?) at school...all huddled together in their us world.

  • two of my favorites:)

  • Thank you, James. Great work.

After all that crowd noise, the musical interlude starting at 8:41 was truly a nice touch.

  • Gosh, Thanks James!

I bet it's really hard to shoot video in the crouds. Some people looking at you like a you're dust or something.

    Cheers for your struggle.
