What a compassionate organization! Healing is possible...

What a brilliant movie.

If you think about it, all of our indiscretions are rooted in a lack of empathy. People who commit major crimes have a major lack of empathy and need healing and to learn and feel connection.

We should never give up on anyone. We must have the compassion to know that criminals are suffering in a place of darkness and that we can relieve that suffering with programs like this.

@iboredmyboring ...I agree completely, unfortunately they prefer to BREED more laborador retrievers instead of helping shelter dogs....I donated to them and then asked them WHY they don't use shelter dogs and got no answer..It can't be because only this breed is "trainable", as they admit that not all of their pedigree dogs do "make" the program. I don't know WHY they shun shelter dogs, as some would certainly be well-suited

They ARE able to charge more money this way, so who knows?

I heard about the "pets behind bars" on the OWN network,& i think it sounds like a great idea, but I wonder if these dogs are purchased from expensive breeders, or if they get, or ever get puppies from animal shelters to train? that way they'd kill 2 birds w/ 1 stone giving a homeless pet a home,& helping the disabled!!!! I too think it might help make the inmate know how the family of the person they killed feels b/c they get attached 2 the dog,& get it taken away from them

I think they understand that and don't take it way too hard. Cause they know that they trained it for the good and know that the dogs will go to a good family.

Such an amazing organization, but these prisoners form bonds with these dogs, and eventually they will have to be seperated from them to give to their new homes. I just couldn't imagine, never being able to love of trust anything or anyone, and they do and then these dogs have to go to their new families, I can't even imagine how hard it would be.

I'd also add to "thefutureisvegan," that frequently those appearing to "lack empathy" throughout the course of their lives, have often not experienced very much empathy from others. So, beyond opening up empathic channels between humans and dogs, it provides a means where communities can open up empathic channels with inmates, recognizing their value. Inmates as well recognize the value of their own work, increasing their self-worth and likelihood to thrive in their communities post-release.

It's a shame there isn't a program like this in every prison. What if the shelters could be emptied of all the unwanted "throw away" animals, and given to all the supposedly "throw away" people in prison to. Maybe it's just that I love dogs myself, but I can't think of any more effective way to "train" a person.......to be human.

this is great, I love it. I am doing a speech on prisons using dogs for these purposes. This brought me to tears!
