Frankfurt am Main: Altstadt: A long pan round the old Roemerburg Platz, starting and ending with the Nikolaikirche. Frankfurt's centre somehow escaped bombing till May 1944. The Main Romerburg buildings actually retained something of their frontage, and were rebuilt, and all the elaborate timber framed buildings were destroyed, but were rebuilt in replica. Brooding benignly over this square is the Commerzbank Tower, Kaiserstrasse, the modern symbol of Frankfurt and the reason why I visited Frankfurt.
