U.S. Military Assistance Enhances Estonian Security
November 9, 2010
Ambassador Michael Polt today turned over the initial installment of 81 mm mortars provided by the United States to Estonia. The Ambassador and Estonian Defense Minister Jaak Aaviksoo witnessed a demonstration of the newly arrived mortars at the Estonian Defense Forces Logistics Center .
The mortars were part of the dozen that have already been provided; another sixty-eight will arrive shortly. The mortars were procured under the auspices of a U.S. program to support the capacity building of troops engaged with the U.S. in stability operations, including the Estonian Forces currently deployed in Afghanistan.
The nearly USD $10M allocated for Estonia under this program has also been used for the provision of and instruction in the use of Raven UAV systems (unmanned drones), counter-Improvised Explosive Devices(IED) training, and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAPs)armored vehicle training.
