This is Peruna's rendition of the first tune recorded by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band shortly before Louis Armstrong had come from New Orleans to join the band which recorded a total of 9 tunes on that day April 6, 1923 in the Gennett studio in Richmond, Indiana. This primitive studio was built right next to a railroad track. Can one imagine that all recording activity frequently had to cease as boxcars would rumble by? The tunes were recorded in front of an accoustic horn onto wax masters. The preparation of the wax discs was a very precious operation and it must have been quite a feat at that time to eventually get some 9 different tracks on the wax discs in one day. All these 9 tracks have become early jazz classics and have been recorded through the years by many very good revival bands.
One of the very best of these revival bands is trombonist Arne Heojberg's Peruna Jazzmen from Denmark. The band has been specializing in the music of the early jazz masters such as King Oliver, LouisArmstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams and Sidney Bechet among others. Since its start in 1959 more than 300 tunes are part of their repertoire. This clip was recorded in 1988 somewhere in the middle of their career and today, in 2007, all the same musicians are still in the band.

I just love the melancholy which runs through this tune;it acts as a consolation for the slings and arrows etc. of life.They would have been stars in the 1920s,no doubt!

This song is really good. I wasn't aware of it until now, even though I know quite a few of them old trad. jazz songs. This one is a keeper, simple as it is. I agree with the comment below.
