SF09 River Dee August 2009 FINAL

River Dee, Scotland - Salmon Fishing August 3rd-8th 2009

We had 2 rods on a 1.5 mile beat. All fish were self-netted but with a wading staff, a 15ft rod and a net with a fish we had no option but to quickly move to the bank and unhook. All fish were quickly restored - all fresh fish, healthy and happily released.

Does releasing the fish mean that this is coarse fishing or is it still classed as game fishing?

It's game fishing, majority of rivers in Scotland (and throughout the UK) are now Catch & Release to preserve the decling stocks of Atlantic Salmon. Due to their status, nice to see one, nice to catch one and nice to put it back so it comes back again (hopefully!).

Not sure of water temps - that's something I need to start looking at. AIr temps -probably 20 deg. C - well let's just say in Neoprene waders at that time of year was bloomin' warm! Light weight breathables would be perfect.

There´s a thermometer on a string at the fishing hut. Try to keep track on the water temperatures, a shift in temperature could be as important as shifts in the water level to trigger the salmon to run, and bite...
