Game review using authentic hardware. A rating is given at the end using a 0 to 10 scale. Multiplayer portions are rated separately. The rating is a measurement of the fun I have playing the game today (not how fun it was back then). I am comparing it against all other video games I have ever played (I don't bump up a score just because the game is old). Basically, I use a consistent scale for everything, whether it is on the Atari 2600, or on the PS3. Games are either fun, or not.

Aspects I do NOT consider when rating:
-Intended audience (I rate from an adult perspective, I don't bump up scores for kid-friendly games.)
-Arcade faithfulness (I don't bump up scores if a game "matches" the arcade.)
-Gamemaker resources (I don't bump up scores of games from "small studios." That goes for home brews as well. Games are either fun or not)

Most importantly, I make every effort to understand how the game is played and try my best to play through the entire game. Cheats are rarely used, and I would only use them if they make the game more fun to play. Regarding difficulty choices, I usually go with the default (medium difficulty).

Rating Scale:

0 ... Flawed. Not a single drop of fun in the game. This game may be unplayable, dysfunctional, broken, etc. This game will never be played again.

1 ... Only a speck of fun to be had. Not much of a game. This game will never be played again.

2 ... May have a few brief moments of fun, but most of it is painful to play. This game will never be played again.

3 ... Playable. Small amount of fun. Not much desire to complete. Has many flaws. No reason to play again.

4 ... Slightly below the fun level of most games. May keep interest for one playthrough. Many flaws. No interest in playing again.

5 ... Average. When the fun is compared to all other games, this one is right in the middle. It's good for one playthrough, but probably won't be played again.

6 ... A tiny bit above average when it comes to fun. May have a slight urge to play this game again sometime.

7 ... Fun. Desire to complete the game. There's an urge to play this game again once time has passed. A few flaws may keep the game from being great.

8 ... Semi-addictive. Will definitely be playing this game again someday.

9 ... Addictive. Glued to the screen. Desire to return to it soon.

10 ... Addictive. So fun, it's a mandatory tradition to play again. This score doesn't mean the game is "perfect" (every game has flaws).

Note: When RPGs that are rated using the above scale, replayability is less of a factor due to the amount of time it takes to play an RPG.
