Different materials are common for hand drill method for a number of reasons.
One is that materials that will work for a hand drill usually don't grow large enough to offer a fire board. Yucca and Sotol and Cattail (Typha) east of the Cascades can work on themselves for hand drill. Also, the fire board in many cases (not all) will tend to be a bit softer than the drill for hand drill.
What is shown in this clip is probably Sotol for the fire board (native to southwest US) or maybe incense cedar (N Calif coast) The drill is possibly Mock Orange (Genus phylladelpum?) or Horse Weed (Conyza canadensis ?) There are numerous combinations that work well, yet plenty that do not. Cat Tail (Typha) on the east side of the Cascades will cooperate, but west side genus does not. Big Leaf Maple also works nice for a drill.
Rabbit Stick happens over near Rexburg Idaho (USA) due west of the Grand Tetons. The Tetons are quite visible from the field where I was teaching this fire class.
Can someone please inform me why dissimilar materials are often suggested for the hearth board and drill?
