according to non-canon sources, there was A spacedock in orbit around earth. It is more of a flattened sphere than the mushroom shape we're familiar with (like this one). Since the NCC-1701 was assembled in space, in a Geosynchrous orbit over 'Frisco (Re: her dedication placard), it is logical to assume some sort of dock was employed. I suspect it was more like the structure seen in TMP, though.

in my opinion the new star trek is an insult to gene roddenberry's vision. by the way, i asked if during the timeline of the TOS there was such a spacedock?
