This is a video of a Lego NXT Prototype from Knuthlab at the University at Albany. It is a simple tripod design with differential drive and a rotating rangefinder. The software is rule-based and is designed so that the robot moves to avoid obstacles.

  • Did you design it or use instructions????

  • This is my own design.

I will be putting these designs online in a few weeks...

  • Did ju use the NXT-G program?

  • Yes, in this instance, I just used NXT-G to program it. There are four threads running simultaneously, and they pass messages back and forth in variables. The first handles the driving, the second handles the ultrasonic rangefinder, and the last two handle the right and left bumpers, respectively. I am now programming it to be controlled by a laptop via bluetooth so that it can map a room.

  • oh that's very good! I wish Minstorms would have a better processor :-)

  • The processor has capabilities similar to the NASA rovers currently operating on Mars. It is best to program it in Java (LeJOS) for better control, rather than the graphic language that comes with it. The real problem is the limited number of motor and sensor ports. These can be expanded with 3rd party software: HiTechnic for example.
